What is Belly Dance?

Belly Dance’ is a term used to describe an expressive form of movement which is rooted in various cultural and heritage dance forms from the Middle East, North Africa, The Levant, Turkey, Greece, the Balkans and the Caucasus as well as nomadic cultures such as the Romani, Domari and Lomavren. In its many configurations, Belly Dance has played an important part in celebration, ceremony, ritual, rite, education, pregnancy, birthing and community since ancient times.

Belly Dance has come to be known for torso articulation and intricate layering of movements. Characteristically it is broad and eclectic, the movements ranging from bold earthy folkloric steps to rich and refined shimmies and undulations.

Folkloric dances can be understood as distinct and coherent regional styles such as Saidi or Hagalla, whereas ‘classical’ or may refer to refined urban composite styles such as Raqs Baladi or Raqs Sharqi which emerged during the Ottoman Empire emphasising performance and musicality. Contemporary’ may be understood as the diversified progressive forms of dance such as American Tribal Style and Tribal Fusion which retain cultural elements of folkloric and classical Belly Dance whilst having undergone a process of creative evolution.

Learning Belly Dance will mean something different to every dancer and in time most will find a stylistic means of expression through its rich and abundant language which speaks to their unique and charismatic self!

Belly Dance is a way of expanding your movement vocabulary and integrating cultural nuance, musicality and feeling. On another level, it can be seen as a holistic healing practice which can help to deepen an awareness of the energetic body, cultivate strength and flexibility, and encourage mindful movement.

Let’s not forget that Belly Dance is also way to have fun and establish community and friendships in an open and supportive space!

Belly Dances Classes

Ruth offers two 1-hour back-to-back lessons on a Friday evening between 19:30 and 21:30.

The first hour follows the Keti Sharif A-Z Belly Dance format and aims to provide a foundation in technique using a series of basic sequences. In these sessions Ruth hopes to bring new dimensions to core moves by focusing on somatic experiencing, beginning to observe the energetic qualities of traditional Belly Dance movement with a more nuanced internal perception.

The second hour will be used to explore choreography, performance and improvisation. In these sessions Ruth will teach a range of choreographies based on Keti Sharif’s AstroBelly, zodiac inspired routines which communicate the distinct qualities associated with Earth, Fire, Water and Air. You will begin to uncover the relationship between the instrument and the dancer on a vibrational level as well as the geometrical relationship between dancers in a space.
