Shiatsu is a type of Japanese massage or energetic body work, developed in Japan in the 6th century it shares it roots with Chinese Medicine. It is the massage of the energy channels and acu points.
Shiatsu is Japanese meaning ‘finger pressure’, the practitioner stimulates the flow of energy around the person’s body using their palms, forearms, knees and sometimes feet, pressure is applied to acu-points using the thumb for specific results.
Treatment is given on a soft futon mattress on the floor and through loose comfortable clothing. Gentle stretches and rotations are given to release blockages and to promote the free flow of energy, blood and lymph, this is especially effective in the hips and shoulders. Shiatsu is fantastic for the relief of tension and stress and to feel better in oneself and to connect to a deeper sense of peace and vitality.
As your Qi begins to flow smoothly, so too does the flow of your emotions and you feel nourished and happier in yourself.
- relieves tension
- helps aid sleep
- helps relaxation
Your Shiatsu practitioner will consider your state of health, the symptoms you are experiencing and, depending on your constitution and general energy levels, will use a variety of techniques to improve your energy flow. These may include gentle holding, pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet on the meridians and, when appropriate, more dynamic rotations and stretches.
As the quality of Ki changes, the symptoms associated with a lack of flow will gradually improve. Shiatsu is a therapy that works on the individual as a complete being – not just the physical body but also on an emotional and/or mental level.
